- Why did you set up The Owl Company?
The Owl Company began because we are passionate about what we do. We wish to share the joy of expression and self-discovery with others – from children to adults. We feel so much emphasis in education is outcome based and focused on academia but education focused on self-discovery leads to greater understanding, confidence and creativity.
- What makes the Owl workshops successful?
We recognize the wholeness of each individual regardless of their background or current situation and therefore acknowledge the equality of all. At our workshops, we offer each participant genuine care and understanding. We encourage the diversity of expression as opposed to confining participants to a predetermined model. We see education as an open forum of sharing and understanding.
- What are the sources of inspiration for these workshops?
Inspiration comes from many sources. From life – with all its varied experiences. From the participants themselves – their stories – their efforts to better their lives and those of others. From my own personal journey and my relationship with the creative essence that holds us all.
- How are the workshops conducted?
The workshops introduce participants to various forms of creative expression such as movement, art, writing, drama and theatre, storytelling, to name a few. One does not need to have any previous experience or be talented in any of these areas. They are a means to explore our life and how we perceive it and they assist us in taking our self-awareness to a deeper level. More than all of that, is the discovery of the joy within us all.
- Which age groups do you target?
Any child of age 7 years old and above, adolescents & teenagers as well as adults, schools and social institutions.
- Who conducts these workshops?
Gerry Hillier is the main teacher but she will be assisted by Jarrah Staggard and Teo Siew Yong depending on the types of workshop/retreats.
- How much will the workshops cost per person?
The workshop fees could range from S$200 for one-day programme, S$600-800 for a 4-day retreat to S$10,000 for a one-week long programme cumulating into a performance.
- How often do you run such workshops?
For now, our calendar allows us to conduct 3-4 times per year. This may change if there is sufficient demand and justification for an increase in frequency.
- Where do you run the workshops besides Singapore?
Mainly Singapore and Australia for a start since they are our home grounds but we are not confined to these 2 countries. We will go whenever there is need for such workshops.
